Selena Gomez Explains Why She Returned for Wizards of Waverly Place Sequel

Revisiting Alex Russo

Selena Gomez has opened up about her decision to reprise her beloved role as Alex Russo in the sequel series Wizards Beyond Waverly Place. The actress and singer, who starred in the original Disney Channel hit from 2007 to 2012, revealed that returning to the magical world was both a personal and professional choice.

In an interview with Allure, Gomez reflected on her early years on the show, which began airing when she was just 15. “I was in these crucial years of my brain developing,” she said, noting how much the experience shaped her both as an actress and as a person.

Connection With the Original Cast

Gomez emphasized the importance of her fellow cast members, including David Henrie, Jennifer Stone, Jake T. Austin, and David DeLuise. “All of those people that are on the show with us have grown and evolved, and I want them to be in my life,” she explained.

Her connection with the cast remains one of the main reasons she felt compelled to make a guest appearance in the sequel. “I think that’s why I always go back. I genuinely feel like I owe a big part of my life to that show,” Gomez shared.

A Family-Inspired Comeback

Beyond her own nostalgia, Gomez revealed that her 12-year-old half-sister, Gracie, has also been watching the reboot. For Gomez, that family connection has been deeply motivating. “It’s a home. It’s safe. My sister just gets a kick out of it, so half the reason I’m doing it is for her,” she said.

The Only Murders in the Building star highlighted how the show continues to resonate with younger generations, making her return even more meaningful.

Wizards Beyond Waverly Place Season 2

The sequel, Wizards Beyond Waverly Place, premiered earlier this year, reigniting the magical charm of the original series while introducing new storylines. Season 2 officially kicks off with a two-episode premiere on Friday, September 12, 2025, bringing Gomez’s character back into the spotlight for fans old and new.
