‘Shootout at Lokhandwala’ Director Sanjay Gupta Dies at 57

Indian filmmaker Sanjay Gupta, best known for directing crime dramas and underworld-themed films such as Shootout at Lokhandwala and Kaante, has died at the age of 57.

According to a report by Film Information, Gupta reportedly suffered a fall in his bathroom before his death. However, his family and friends have not officially confirmed the cause of death.

Gupta was widely recognised for his distinctive filmmaking style, particularly his gritty portrayal of gangsters, organised crime and the Mumbai underworld. His films helped establish a recognisable identity in Hindi cinema through action-driven stories and crime-based narratives.

His career in the Indian film industry spanned approximately three decades, during which he directed several commercially recognised movies featuring leading Bollywood actors.

A Career Spanning Three Decades

Gupta made his directorial debut in 1994 with Aatish: Feel the Fire, starring Sanjay Dutt and Aditya Pancholi. The film introduced his interest in action and crime-oriented storytelling.

He later directed Kaante in 2002, a heist drama featuring an ensemble cast led by Amitabh Bachchan, Sanjay Dutt, Suniel Shetty, Mahesh Manjrekar, Lucky Ali and Kumar Gaurav.

The film became one of the notable projects of his career and earned recognition for its ensemble performances and crime-based storyline.

Another major milestone came with Shootout at Lokhandwala, which explored a police encounter involving members of Mumbai’s underworld. The film featured Vivek Oberoi, Sanjay Dutt, Amitabh Bachchan and other prominent actors.

Gupta continued working across different genres while maintaining his association with action and crime dramas. His filmography also included Musafir, Zinda, Shootout at Wadala, Jazbaa, Kaabil and Mumbai Saga.

His projects often featured intense action sequences, stylised visuals and stories inspired by crime and gang-related themes.

A Recognisable Name in Hindi Cinema

Over the years, Gupta developed a distinct position in Bollywood through films that focused on crime, revenge, gang rivalries and the Mumbai underworld.

His work with established actors and his approach to action filmmaking made him a familiar name among audiences who followed Hindi crime dramas.

His death at 57 marks the loss of a filmmaker whose career was closely associated with some of Bollywood’s memorable action and gangster films.

Further details surrounding his death, including the official cause, had not been publicly confirmed by his family or close associates in the information available at the time of reporting.
