Sabalenka Says Serena Williams Return Would Be “Cool” as Tennis Legend Keeps Future Open

World number one Aryna Sabalenka has expressed excitement at the possibility of Serena Williams returning to professional tennis, describing it as “cool” if the American great decided to make a comeback. Serena, a 23-time Grand Slam singles champion and mother of two, has not competed since a third-round loss at the 2022 US Open but recently re-entered the tennis anti-doping testing pool, sparking speculation about a return.

When asked about her plans on the television show Today, Serena did not confirm a comeback but also refused to rule it out. “I’m just having fun and enjoying my life right now,” she said. Pressed further, she added, “That’s not a yes or a no. I don’t know, I’m just going to see what happens.” Her re-entry into the anti-doping program raised eyebrows, though she declined to comment on the matter.

Sabalenka, who is contesting her fourth consecutive Melbourne final, said she had not spoken directly with Serena but was supportive of whatever decision she makes. “If she wants to come back, that’s her decision. It’s going to be fun to see her back on tour. She’s got the personality, and she’s a fun one. It will be cool,” Sabalenka said.

Elina Svitolina, beaten by Sabalenka in the Melbourne semi-finals, echoed similar sentiments. “It would be amazing for the sport. She’s such a great champion, achieved so much, and inspired women around the world,” Svitolina said.

Tennis commentator and former world number one Jim Courier highlighted the significance of Serena re-entering the anti-doping testing pool. “No person that doesn’t intend to play professional tennis is going to put themselves in that list, especially someone with as much experience as Serena Williams,” Courier said. He noted that athletes must provide whereabouts for six months of testing before returning to competition, implying that Serena’s registration signals serious intent to play.

While Serena has not committed to singles or doubles, speculation suggests she could participate in mixed doubles, women’s doubles, or even a singles event in the future. The Williams sisters have previously won 14 Grand Slam doubles titles together and three Olympic gold medals, further adding excitement to any potential return.

As the tennis world watches closely, fans and fellow players alike remain eager to see whether one of the sport’s greatest icons will step back onto the court.
