Yash-starrer Toxic is reportedly facing a major financial setback, with industry estimates suggesting that the gangster drama could result in losses of around ₹300 crore following an underwhelming theatrical performance.
The film, which was released in cinemas on August 26, has reportedly struggled to meet expectations amid weak audience response and disappointing box-office results.
According to a report by Bollywood Hungama, Toxic recorded an opening of approximately ₹120 crore in India. However, its overall theatrical collections are now reportedly expected to remain below the ₹250 crore mark.
The film’s disappointing performance has also created difficulties for its post-theatrical business, particularly its reported digital rights deal.
Before the release, the makers had reportedly received an offer of around ₹150 crore from a major streaming platform. However, the team was said to be looking for a deal worth more than ₹200 crore, expecting strong box-office numbers to strengthen its negotiating position.
Those expectations have reportedly changed following the film’s performance in cinemas.
With Toxic struggling at the box office, streaming platforms are said to have significantly reduced their offers for the film. Reports indicate that OTT offers across different languages could now be as low as ₹30 crore.
ZEE5 has reportedly made the highest offer among the platforms currently interested in acquiring the digital rights, although the exact terms of any deal have not been officially confirmed.
The situation has reportedly prompted the makers to explore alternative strategies to improve the film’s value in the digital market.
One option under consideration is a substantially revised version of Toxic specifically created for its OTT release. The proposed digital cut could reportedly include changes designed to make the film more commercially appealing to streaming platforms.
A source quoted by Bollywood Hungama claimed that the makers are considering a completely new edit in the hope of obtaining a better digital deal than the offers currently available.
Such a move could give the production team another opportunity to recover part of its investment. However, whether a revised OTT version would result in a significantly higher offer remains uncertain.
Satellite rights are also expected to contribute to the film’s recovery, although reports suggest that these rights may have limited value because of the movie’s adult-oriented storyline.
The reported ₹300 crore loss has therefore emerged from estimates based on the film’s production costs, theatrical performance and current expectations for its digital and satellite rights.
It is important to note that the figure is not an officially confirmed loss. The final financial outcome will depend on the film’s eventual theatrical earnings as well as the value of its OTT, satellite and other distribution rights.
If the reported numbers remain unchanged, Toxic could nevertheless become one of the more significant financial disappointments involving a major Indian film in recent years.
