Bollywood actor Rani Mukerji is mourning the death of her mother, Krishna Mukerji, who passed away on Tuesday afternoon at the age of 75.
Yash Raj Films confirmed the news on behalf of the Mukerji family and asked the public and media to respect the family’s privacy as they cope with the loss.
In a statement, Yash Raj Films said that Krishna Mukerji had died that afternoon at the age of 75. The family also expressed gratitude for the love, prayers and support being offered during the difficult period.
The official statement did not disclose the cause of death. However, a source cited by ETimes reportedly said that Krishna Mukerji died following a heart attack. This detail has not been officially confirmed by the family.
Krishna Mukerji had her own connection to the Indian entertainment industry. She was a former playback singer with reported credits in Bengali and Hindi cinema, including films such as Momer Alo, Haiwan, Teesri Aankh and Tomar Rakte Amar Sohag.
She was married to filmmaker Ram Mukerji, who worked as a director and producer and was associated with the establishment of Filmalaya Studios. Ram Mukerji died in 2017 at the age of 84.
The couple had two children, Rani Mukerji and filmmaker-producer Raja Mukerji.

Krishna also came from a prominent Bengali film family. She was the sister of National Award-winning actress Debashree Roy, giving her longstanding connections with the Bengali entertainment industry.
Her family connections extended further into Indian cinema through her marriage to Ram Mukerji. The wider Mukerji-Samarth film family includes well-known personalities such as actress Kajol and filmmaker Ayan Mukerji.
For Rani Mukerji, however, her mother’s importance extended far beyond their family’s connection to cinema. Krishna was a major influence on Rani’s personal values and professional journey.
Rani has previously spoken about how her mother encouraged her to pursue acting. At the same time, Krishna was also willing to give her daughter honest feedback during the early part of her career.
Rani once recalled that her mother was not convinced she was ready after watching her screen test for her debut film. According to Rani’s recollection, Krishna even suggested that the producer reconsider casting her.
Despite those early reservations, Krishna remained an important source of support as Rani developed into one of Hindi cinema’s most recognised actors.
Earlier this year, Rani also spoke to India Today about her childhood and her upbringing in what she described as a humble Bengali family. She recalled that her family experienced financial difficulties, but said her mother continued to maintain a positive outlook.
Rani remembered Krishna as someone who taught her to smile despite difficult circumstances and continue moving forward. That lesson, she said, became an important part of her own approach to life.
Rani Mukerji has built a career spanning decades, with notable performances in films including Ghulam, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Saathiya, Hum Tum and Black. She was most recently seen in Mardaani 3, released in 2026.
The news of Krishna Mukerji’s death also comes shortly after Rani received recognition at the 62nd Maharashtra State Film Awards. She was presented with the Raj Kapoor Special Contribution Award for her contribution to Indian cinema.
During her acceptance speech, Rani spoke about her deep connection with Maharashtra, describing the state as her birthplace and the place where she built her career and much of her life.
With Krishna Mukerji’s passing, Rani and her family are now dealing with a deeply personal loss. The family has requested privacy while grieving and has thanked well-wishers for their support and condolences.
