John Cena Admits He Did Not Have His Heart in Early Hollywood Films

John Cena has reflected on the early years of his Hollywood career, admitting that he was not fully committed to some of the film projects he took on after making the transition from professional wrestling to acting.

The WWE star discussed his journey during an appearance on Today while promoting his upcoming movie Matchbox the Movie, which is scheduled to arrive in cinemas on October 9, 2026.

Cena began his acting career in 2006, but he acknowledged that finding his place in Hollywood took considerably longer than he initially expected.

Looking back at his early projects, Cena said he did not approach them with the same passion that he had for professional wrestling.

The actor explained that wrestling was where he felt most comfortable at the time. Performing in front of thousands of fans, travelling internationally and appearing regularly in the ring suited the stage of his life he was in.

According to Cena, the filmmaking environment was very different from the fast-paced world of professional wrestling. He found movie production to be considerably slower and more patient than what he was accustomed to.

That difference contributed to his early struggles in the film industry. Cena openly acknowledged that he did not have the maturity or understanding at the time to fully appreciate the collaborative nature of filmmaking.

The actor said his lack of commitment ultimately contributed to Hollywood moving on from him. He now views that experience as a justified consequence of not giving those opportunities the attention they deserved.

However, Cena’s perspective on acting has changed significantly over the past two decades. The 49-year-old performer said he has developed a strong passion for his work and considers himself fortunate to have received another opportunity in Hollywood.

He also said his current approach comes from years of experience and personal growth. Rather than viewing a movie simply through the performance of its leading actors, Cena now appreciates the contribution of everyone involved in bringing a production to the screen.

That includes crew members working behind the scenes, as well as people involved in catering, lighting, grips, assistant directing and other areas of production.

Cena’s comments also highlighted how his understanding of success has evolved since his early acting days. His experience in wrestling helped establish him as a major entertainment personality, but his later career has allowed him to explore a broader range of roles and projects.

During the interview, Today co-host Craig Melvin praised Cena for his willingness to openly examine his own career and shortcomings.

Cena responded by emphasizing the value of honestly evaluating both strengths and weaknesses. He said people can acknowledge their flaws while continuing to work toward becoming better versions of themselves.

His comments offer a candid look at the long process behind his Hollywood career and show how his attitude toward acting has developed since his first film appearances nearly two decades ago.

Cena is now preparing for another major release with Matchbox the Movie, which is set to hit theaters on October 9, 2026.
