Veteran actor Sam Neill, best known for his iconic role as Dr. Alan Grant in the blockbuster film Jurassic Park, has died at the age of 78. His agent confirmed that the actor passed away due to pneumonia after previously overcoming lymphoma through advanced treatment.
Neill died in Australia on Monday, with his family announcing his death in a statement. At the time, his family confirmed that he was cancer-free but did not initially reveal the cause of his passing.
His long-time agent Philip Grenz later clarified that Neill died from pneumonia after successfully recovering from lymphoma through CAR-T therapy, a form of genetic treatment that modifies a patient’s immune cells to fight cancer.
The actor’s family has announced plans to hold a private memorial service in New Zealand at a later date. According to Grenz, Neill was a private person, and his family intends to respect his wishes by organizing a small ceremony at his farm in New Zealand.
Despite his health challenges, Neill remained active in the entertainment industry. His agent revealed that the actor completed four projects during the past year, which are expected to be released in the coming months.
Neill had previously opened up about his health struggles in his 2023 memoir, where he revealed that he had been diagnosed with stage-three non-Hodgkin lymphoma. At the time, he shared that he feared his illness could be life-threatening.
Earlier this year, the actor announced that he was cancer-free following genetic therapy that helped strengthen his immune system. His recovery allowed him to continue working and remain involved in several upcoming projects.
Born in Northern Ireland in 1947, Neill moved to New Zealand during his childhood. Although his birth name was Nigel John Dermot, he later adopted the name Sam as he began building his acting career.
Neill started his journey in the film industry through New Zealand productions in the early 1970s before gaining recognition through major roles in Australian cinema. His international breakthrough came in 1993 when he portrayed paleontologist Dr. Alan Grant in Steven Spielberg’s Jurassic Park.
The role became one of the defining performances of his career and earned him worldwide recognition. His performance in the popular science-fiction franchise made him a familiar face among global audiences.
Beyond acting, Neill was also known for his passion for winemaking and owned vineyards in the Central Otago region of New Zealand’s South Island.
Following his death, tributes poured in from friends, colleagues, neighbors, director Steven Spielberg, and fellow Jurassic Park stars including Laura Dern and Jeff Goldblum. Fans around the world also remembered Neill for his decades-long contribution to cinema and his memorable performances.
