Mr Bean Star Rowan Atkinson Announces Rare Live Stage Comeback After 40 Years

British comedy legend Rowan Atkinson is returning to the London stage with Rowan Live, a limited-run show featuring classic characters, iconic sketches and brand-new comedy material.

Rowan Atkinson, the internationally celebrated actor best known for playing Mr Bean, is preparing for a rare live stage appearance with a new production titled Rowan Live. The show will bring some of his most memorable comedy performances back to the stage while introducing fresh material for audiences.

The production is scheduled to run at London’s Gillian Lynne Theatre from February 8 to March 13, 2027. With only 30 performances planned, the limited engagement is expected to attract fans eager to see the legendary comedian perform live.

The upcoming show will revisit characters and sketches that helped establish Atkinson as one of Britain’s most recognisable comedy performers. Alongside classic material, the production will feature newly written sketches developed specifically for the stage.

Rowan Live to Feature Mr Bean and Blackadder

Fans can look forward to material connected with several of Atkinson’s best-known comedy projects, including Mr Bean, Blackadder and the BBC sketch comedy series Not the Nine O’Clock News.

These productions played an important role in shaping his career, showcasing his distinctive physical comedy, expressive facial reactions and talent for creating memorable characters.

Mr Bean, in particular, became a global television phenomenon. The character’s minimal dialogue and humorous everyday mishaps allowed audiences from different countries and language backgrounds to enjoy the comedy.

Through Rowan Live, Atkinson plans to revisit some of the sketches that helped launch his career while giving audiences something new to enjoy. The combination of familiar performances and original material will form the centrepiece of the production.

Rowan Atkinson Reunites With Longtime Collaborators

The new stage show will bring Atkinson together with several longtime creative partners. Writer Richard Curtis, who previously collaborated with him on Mr Bean and Blackadder, is among the team contributing to the production.

Curtis is also widely known for writing successful romantic comedies, including Love Actually, Notting Hill and Four Weddings and a Funeral.

Writer Ben Elton and composer Howard Goodall are also involved in developing the new material. Their contributions are expected to help shape the show’s mixture of familiar comedy and original performances.

Raz Shaw will direct Rowan Live, while Howard Goodall will compose the music. Playful Productions is presenting the production in association with PBJ Management.

The creative team’s long history with British television and theatre comedy adds another notable element to Atkinson’s return.

A Major Stage Moment for the British Comedy Star

Atkinson first gained wider recognition through Not the Nine O’Clock News before building a strong following with Blackadder. His international popularity grew considerably during the 1990s as Mr Bean became one of television’s most enduring comedy characters.

His performances often rely on physical expression, carefully timed reactions and visual humour rather than lengthy dialogue. This distinctive approach has helped his work remain popular with audiences across generations.

Although Atkinson is strongly associated with television and film, he has also appeared on stage throughout his career. His last West End appearance was in 2013, when he starred in a revival of Simon Gray’s play Quartermaine’s Terms.

The upcoming Rowan Live production marks a significant return to the West End comedy stage, offering audiences a chance to experience his performances in a live theatre setting.
